Nrityagram's Surupa Sen in Vinati - Songs from the Gita Govinda
In the last 3 decades since the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble has started performing, this has been our longest break. Like every other dance company in the world, we also took time off to pause and reflect on different aspects of our art.
In addition to training the students, Surupa Sen, our creative head, has had the time to relook at some of the fundamentals of Odissi. She has devised interesting sets of basic steps that incorporate various feet positions, Odissi usage of the vocabulary of the Natyashastra, new Arasas with thrilling tala patterns, amongst others. Some of this work was showcased online during our annual show NrityaUtsarga, which many of you have watched.
However most interestingly, over the last 2 years, she has had the time to create some solo pieces for herself. This is rare, as she has almost always created work for the Nrityagram dancers, the ensemble and seldom for herself.
Surupa will perform a couple of these compositions at her upcoming show - our first Live Performance!
